Air Cargo Makes a Soft Start to 2023

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for global air cargo markets in January 2023, indicating that demand has decreased as economic headwinds persist.

With January cargo demand in tonne-kilometers (CTKs) down 14.9% and capacity (measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers, ACTK) up 3.9%, 2023 began under some challenging business conditions. The increase in ACTKs, however, is due to a strong recovery of belly capacity in passenger airline markets, which partially offsets a decline in international capacity and creates a solid ground for some cautious optimism about air cargo.
